Carnation was originally named "Dianthus" by a Greek botanist, Theopharastus but its current namesake is traced to the words "coronation" or " corone", meaning flower garlands, as they were widely used in Greek ceremonial crowns.
According to Christian legend, pink carnations grew from the tears of Mary, who cried at the plight of Jesus' crucifixion. As such, they have come to represent a mother's undying love and in 1907, carnations were chosen as the emblem for Mother's Day.
Just like other flowers, carnations too have a colour language of their own :
* Red - Deep love and affection, "My heart aches for you"
or "I admire you"
* White - Pure love and good luck
* Pink - Mother's undying love or "I'll never forget you"
* Purple - Capriciousness
* Yellow - Rejection; "you disappoint me"
* Green - St Patrick's Day
Beautify your Mother's Day with a bouquet of carnations!!
And wishing all of you a Happy Mother's Day !
