Foods that are good for your gums and teeth.

Dairy products
Milk, yogurt and cheese are rich in calcium and phosphorous, which buffer acids and protect tooth enamel from erosion. Calcium also aids in saliva production, which neutralizes acids in the mouth and helps kill bacteria.

Celery
Munching on crunchy, fiber-rich vegetables -- like celery -- cleanse the teeths and massages your gums, which increases circulation and can help remove bacteria that can cause cavities and plaque.

Citrus fruits
Although they're acidic, research shows that citrus fruits such as oranges and grapefruits tend to protect tooth enamel by increasing saliva flow. They're also water-rich, which helps wash away cavity-causing bacteria.

Whole grains
Whole grains contain B vitamins and iron which help keep your gums healthy, too. According to a Canadian study of 34,000 men, those who ate three daily servings of whole grains -- think brown or wild rice, barley, oatmeal and whole-wheat bread -- were 23 percent less likely to suffer from periodontitis, a severe form of gum disease.

Sesame seeds
Another great calcium source, sesame seeds have a gritty texture that acts like tiny toothbrushes to tackle plaque buildup. Sprinkle them on cereals or blend into yogurt and soups.

Fish
The omega-3 fatty acids found in fish and fish oil have a protective effect against inflammation and infection, and may help ward off gum disease -- the biggest threat to healthy teeth.

Water
Frequent consumption of sugary drinks contribute to the formation of decay-causing acids in the mouth. Cut back on sugar-laden sodas and sports drinks and quench your thirst with water instead.

Lean Protein
Eggs, poultry and lean beef are a rich source of phosphorous, a mineral that is critical to maintaining strong tooth enamel and also helps balance pH levels in the mouth, discouraging the growth of acid-producing bacteria.
