Anti-aging tips for eyes

It’s become a fact of life that many of us spend more time staring at a screen – whether it’s our computers or handheld devices – than at real-life scenery.

While its common knowledge that we should take a break away from our computers every 30 to 45 minutes, we usually lose track of time amidst the hustle and bustle of work and end up with fatigued and irritated eyes.

The following tips will help you maintain good eye health and prevent them from deteriorating faster than they should.

1. ANTI-FATIGUE LENSES
Spectacle-wearers should opt for anti-fatigue lenses as they help reduce strain on the eye when you’re reading and writing. These specially-designed lenses help prevent the muscles in your eye from contracting excessively during close-range activities and may be useful for someone who is required to use the computer for most of the day.

2. FIX YOUR POSTURE
Unnecessary strain on the eyes can be prevented by positioning your computer screen at the correct angle, which is usually slightly below your line of sight. It is also recommended that you also try to position the screen about 50 centimeters away from you if possible.

3. ANTI-GLARE SCREENS
The glare from your computers screens can cause your eyes to be strained. Try fixing an anti-reflective film on your computer screen and moving it away from bright lights and windows to minimize the glare. Requesting for an anti-reflective coating on your spectacles will also help.

4. DO NOT RUB
As difficult as it may be, do not rub your eyes when they are itchy. Instead, use eye lubricants to help soothe the itch. As the itch is usually a result of dry eyes, keeping your eyes moisturised with a lubricant is about as essential as keeping your skin hydrated with a moisturiser. Rubbing your eyes might take your mind off the itch but will only make your eyes more uncomfortable and inflamed later.

6. DON’T OVERUSE CONTACT LENSES
Treat your eyes the way you’d treat your body and give them a “holiday” from wearing contact lenses from time to time. This reduces the risk of dry eyes and infections from prolonged contact lens wear.

7. WATCH YOUR DIET
Take care of your eyes from the inside out with a diet rich in omega-3 fatty acid, which helps alleviate dry eyes. Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids include cold-water fish such as salmon, mackerel and halibut, and flaxseed oil. Eating anti-inflammatory foods and increasing your intake of anti-oxidants may also help protect cells from free radical damage and prevent some age-related diseases like macular degeneration and cataract.
